Evaluation of antinoceptive activity of the water soluble extract of sea cucumber [Malaysia]

The antinoceptive activity of the water extract of sea cucumber (SCE) was evaluated in mice using writhings, hot tail-flick and cold tail-flick techniques, in comparison to morphine and paracetamol. Whilst the control group and group treated with paracetamol exhibited no significant effect, SCE (100 mg/kg) and morphine (5 mg/kg) reduced acetic acid-induced writhings from 17.5 + - 2.8 counts to 4.1 + - 1.5 and 7.3 + - 0.6 counts, respectively. All three drugs produced significant analgesia when tested by the hot tail-flick. Morphine produced peak maximum possible analgesia (MPA) of 35.1 + - 4.8, while paracetamol and SCE produced MPA values of 27.8 + - 2.1 and 42.2 + - 4.2, respectively. When tested on cold tail-flick, paracetamol did not exhibit significant antinoceptive activity, whilst morphine and SCE exhibited significant antinoceptive activity with the peak MPA values of 66.2 + - 2.4 and 36.1 + - 9.5, respectively. The present data confirm our previous observations and suggest that SCE may possess analgesic activity beyond the reach of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesic but of comparable efficacy to those opioid analgesic
