Field genebanks for food crops conservation [special reference to Malaysia]
1995
Abdul Ghani Yunus (Pertanian Malaysia Univ., Serdang, Selangor (Malaysia). Farm Div.. Plant Germplasm Unit)
Field genebank is useful in the conservation of species with recalcitrant seed and the clonally propagated crops. Many important food crops in Malaysia are in these groups. Field genebank cannot be used as base collection because of high cost and difficulty in maintaining the original genetic diversity and high level of genetic integrity. Field genebanks as a conservation technology has its own unique conservation system. If preserving recalcitrant seed is possible in future, some crops will face the problem of long regeneration cycle. There is prospect of conserving food crops with difficult material by in vitro methods and seedling bank. Field genebank could provide continuous opportunity to evaluate the germplasm in the field and designation of core collection will encourage greater use of a germplasm collection by breeders
