A total of six varietal improvement activities on wheat were carried out at either Lumle Centre (1675m) or Testing Site Shera (1200m) in the winter season of 1994/95. They were F2, F2, F3 and F4 generation lines, Rainfed Nursery Trial and Coordinated Varietal Trial on wheat. Selection of wheat entries was based on yield, yield components, phenology, disease reactions along with grain size and colour. In F2, a total of 16 lines were selected considering all the selection criteria. In F2 generation, 16 lines were found promising and selected to promote to F3 generation. Out of 10 F3 family lines, 13 lines representating seven families were selected for further evaluation in F4 generation. In F4 generation eight lines were found suitable for upland condition and another six for irrigated conditions. Segregating lines of wheat were arranged into two groups i.e. early maturing and late maturing, and early types were screened on rainfed condition whereas late types were evaluated under irrigated condition. Based upon overall selection criteria the following entries were identified as promising entries: NL-768, NL-771, NL-775, Nl-776, PWL-114, WK-823, WK-832, WK-833, GAA/KEA/GAA, GLN-ACC/DOVE, SUZHOE, FEEno.8-12-OY-ODIN, WPH-185, WPH-223, CIGM-87-1017, CIGM-87-113, CIGM-87-113 and CIGM-87-113. Similarly in the Coordinated Varietal Trial, NL-645, NL-665, NL-714, WK-801 and WK-804 were found better in terms of grain yield, straw yield, crop duration, grain type and days to 50 heading
