Study on the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of indigenous goat breed (Sinhal)

A total of 150 breeding female Sinhal goats maintained at Sheep and Goat Research Program (SGRP) were used to record the phenotypic (physical) and functional (productive) characteristics. The data collected over the 3 years are described. Sinhal goats in Western Mountainous region are hairy and heavier compared to the Khari (Sinhal type) goat breed. However, the difference in live weight may be due to the different breed strain. Jumli Sinhal were higher in most of the body measurements compared to the Eastern hilly goat breeds. Regarding the productive performance, the Sinhal goat grew faster at the rate of 76.9 g/d than hilly goat (54 g/d). Sinhal produced 200 gram of coarse long (15.0 cm) fibre of more than 60, Sinhal were capable to carry more load (13 kg grain/goat/trip) 32.5 percent of live weight) than sheep (10.0 kg/sheep/trip). The milk produced in Karnali region is enough to rear singleton as the production is about 200 ml/day during 2-3 weeks of kidding. The milk yield in eastern mountain region is higher compared to this region.
