The use of rural peoples' knowledge (RPK) as a research tool for soil survey in the eastern hills of Nepal

Rural peoples' knowledge (RPK) represents a logical starting point and a rich body of resources for successful agricultural research. During 1992-1993, a survey of red soil areas was carried out in the eastern hills of Nepal. Given the limitations of conventional soil survey methodologies in the Nepali context, the elicitation of local soil classification systems and associated knowledge forms an important source of information. This paper describes the approaches used in the study and examines the role of RPK in the research process. Some of the characteristics and structures of systems are described and the advantages of using RPK as a research strategy are assessed. The complementary nature of conventional soil survey and the collection of RPK is discussed.
