Genetic trend estimation for milk traits in the Slovenian simmental, brown and black-and-white breed

With selection a difference in the population mean for a trait is expected, i.e. genetic gain. The genetic gain for male animals was estimated on breeding values of bulls born between 1977 and 1988. These breeding values were estimated on the milk production data of the first lactation cows, daughters of these bulls with the BLUP method in the year 1995 (34.284 records of the Simmental breed, 21.847 of the Brown cows and 20.320 of the Black-and-White). BLUP solutions for the genetic groups represent the genetic gain, because the bulls are distributed into these groups with respect to their year of birth. There were 54.163 estimated breeding values for the Simmental breed cows, 32.489 respectively 26.490 estimated breeding values for the Brown, respective Black-and-White breed avaliable to estimate the genetic gain on the female side. These breeding values were estimated on 2,66 lactation records for the Simmental breed and 2,57 respectively 2,51 lactation records for the Brown, respectively Black-and-White breed cows. The traits processed were milk, fat and protein yield and fat and protein content. It can be concluded that the genetic level expressed as the mean breeding value of cows was in the year 1991 332 kg milk for the Black-and-White, 233 kg for the Simmental and 161 kg for the Brown breed higher than in the year 1971.
