Life cycle, damage and control of Heteronychus Beetles on rice in Zanzibar

Beetles of the genus Heteronychus are a pest in rainfed rice. The most common species is Heteronchus Pygidialis, formerly erroneously identified as H. Andersoni. A second, less common species was identified as H. Consimilis. During the period October 1990 to present observations were done in different places on the Unguja island on occurence and distribution of these beetles. In many rice and sugarcane growing areas some beetles or larvae were found, but only in the periods of moderate rainfall and moist but not water logged, sandy or loamy soils damage to young crops appeared to be important. All stages (eggs to adults) could be found at the same time during the observation period in or around rice fields. Generations seem to be overlapping, and the number per year could not be determined
