Banana weevil infestation of cooking and beer bananas in adjuscent stands in Uganda

Banana weevil population and associated damage were studied in adjusted stands of highland cooking (cv Kibuzi) and introduced beer (cv Kisubi) bananas on two farms in central Uganda. Weevil density and mobility were assessed using mark and recapture techniques. Additionally, bananas corms and pseudostems were evaluated for weevil damage at various times after harvest. Newly harvested cooking bananas displayed moderate weevil damage which reached the corm centre. In contrast, damage to standing beer bananas was light and reached the corm periphery; for this cultivar, the weevils preferred postharvest residue to growing plants. Attack of true stems started 6 weeks after harvest while while larval feeding reached the corm centre 12 weeks after harvest. Weevil density, in part, reflected crop density and system complexity, presumabily due to effects on soil moisture. The data suggested that high weevil population in beer banana stands resulted from reproduction within postharvest residues
