Ecological conditions, growth and silvical characteristics of tree species of the genus Sorbus, wild cherry and European walnut

The study is concerned with ecological conditions, morphology, growth and silvical characteristics, and the importance of the growing of wild service tree, whitebeam tree, European mountain ash, service tree and wild cherry. For the preservation of wild service tree and service tree in the forests of Slovenia both natural and artificial regeneration will be needed. These two species do not attain significant height, but their d.b.h. is considerable if crowns are released. Low stem wood quality is due to the past management neglect. The European mountain ash wood has so far not been valued and the species has been preserved in only a few places for silvicultural purposes. White-beam tree has been preserved in extreme sites or in devastated stands. Wild cherry is often found intermixed with other species in lowlying and submontane forests, though the quality of stem wood is much lower than it would have been if trees had been pruned. The paper presents results of an analysis of a 29-years old European walnut plantation, development of which was monitored with annual measurements.
