Ammonia losses following the application of solid manure were measured in field and wind tunnel experiments. Mean losses were about 60 % of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) applied. Wind tunnel experiments with solid manure undertaken in different seasons showed a linear and highly significant relationship between the rate of ammoniacal nitrogen applied (MTAN) and losses. This indicates that the losses were hardly influenced by climatic factors or the origin of the manure. On farms ammonia losses following the spreading of solid manure can be estimated by the following equation: losses (kg N/ha) = 0.59 MTAN + 0.57. The experiments indicate that ammonia losses after manure application tend to be lower for liquid manure systems than for systems in which slurry and solid manure are produced
