The effect of extracts from Zingiber officinale on multiplication of tobacco mosaic virus in leaves and mesophyll protoplasts of Nicotiana tabacum

The effect of water and acetone extracts from ginger (Zingiber officinale) with respect to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) multiplication in in vitro infected mesophyll protoplasts of tobacco was investigated. Both extracts at a resultant dilution 1:10 inactivated purified TV and PVX to 67-87 % of the control, acetone extract still inactivated TMV and PVX at a dilution 1:50 (75-88 % untreated control). Acetone extract did not influence the number of in vitro inoculated and noninoculated mesophyll protoplasts and its viability after 72 hour cultivation in any of the concentrations used. The TMV content was significantly reduced in relation to extract concentration in inoculated protoplasts.
