Rabies in the Czech Republic and its control by oral immunization
1996
Matouch, O. | Jaros, J. (Statni Veterinarni Ustav, Liberec (Czech Republic))
Rabies occurs endemically in the Czech Republic and the major source and vector is red fox. The incidence reached its peak of 2,232 cases in 1994. Attempts to control the infection by a reduction of the fox population had only local and temporary effects. Currently, the oral vaccine Lysvulpen, prepared of the strain SAD-Bern, is used. More than seven million vaccine-containing baits were distributed in the Czech Republic in 1989-1995. The number of cases of rabies reported per year dropped by 88 % during this period. Only 178 cases were reported in 1995.
