Apple cultivars recommended for an integrated system of growing in Czech Republic
1994
Blazek, J. (Research and Breeding Inst. of Pomology, Holovousy (Czech Republic))
For this system of growing altogether 30 apple cultivars have been selected. A resistance and tolerance to diseases (scab and mildew) were the most important criterion of the choice. In the warmest and dry growing regions both very late cultivars with a good storage-ability and early summer ones should be grown. From the first group there are e.g. "Florina", "Glockenapfel", "Jonadel", and "Zuzana" and from the latter "Discovery", "Julia" and "Mio". Cultivars with a high or middle sensitivity to mildew should be omitted there. For mild climatic conditions typical for traditional apple regions cultivars with the best quality of fruit should be in preference: "Angold" "Dublet", "Lord Lambourne Red", "Melodie", "Resista", "Rubin" and "Selena". In colder and wetter growing areas cultivars with shorter growing season, highly resistant to scab and with some tolerance both to winter and spring frosts should be preferred: "Denar", "Jolana". "Jolana", "Liberty", "Melodie". In the most severe growing conditions (frost depresions only a few hardy or local cultivars should be chosen: "Auralia", "Chodske", "Wealthy Double Red". For the fresh market cultivars with attractive fruit and excellent taste like "Akane", "Lord Lambourne Red", "Resita", "Rubin" and "Selena" should be in a preference whereas for processing very productive cultivars with high content of acids and juice like "Angold", "Jolana", "Melodie" and "Produkta" should be chosen.
