An experiment on the growth of cocoa seedling on peat medium in various moisture and lime content had been conducted in the glasshouse of Kaliwining Experimental Garden, Jember Research Institute for Estate Crops, since August 1987 until January 1990. The experiment was held factorially with basic design of Randomized Complete Block Design, and consisted of two factors. The first factor was peat water content, and the second was percentage of lime (CaCO3) added. Factor of peat water content consisted of four levels, i.e. L1= 65-70 percent; L2= 80-85 percent; L3= 95-100 percent; and L4= 110-115 percent field capacity whereas liming factor consisted of four levels, i.e. K0= 0 percent; K1= 3 percent; K2= 6 percent; and K3= 9 percent of dry weight. Treatments were replicated three times, and the observation was done until the seedlings were four months old

Penelitian untuk mengetahui pertumbuhan bibit kakao pada medium gambut dengan berbagai kadar lengas dan pengapuran telah dilakukan di rumah kaca Kebun Percobaan Kaliwining, Pusat Penelitian Perkebunan Jember, dimulai bulan Agustus 1989 sampai dengan Januari 1990. Penelitian disusun secara faktorial dengan rancangan dasar Rancangan Acak Kelompok Lengkap, terdiri atas dua faktor, yaitu kadar lengas dan persentase kapur (CaCo3) yang ditambahkan.Faktor kadar lengas terdiri atas empat level, yaitu 65-70 persen, 80-85 persen, 95-100 persen, dan 110-115 persen terhadap kapasitas lapangan, sedangkan faktor dosis kapur terdiri atas 4 level, yaitu 0 persen, 3 persen, 6 persen dan 9 persen atas bobot kering. Perlakuan diulang tiga kali, dan pengamatan dilakukan sampai dengan bibit berumur empat bulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar lengas medium gambut berpengaruh nyata terhadap parameter pertumbuhan bibit kakao, dengan hasil yaitu kadar lengas antara 80-85 menghasilkan pertumbuhan terbaik. Pengapuran sebesar 4-5 bobot kering dengan nyata memperbaiki pertumbuhan bibit kakao pada medium gambut
