Performance of ten tropical onion cultivars in Chitwan, Nepal

A study was carried out to evaluate nine exotic and one popularly grown tropical onion cultivars at IAAS, Rampur, Chitwn, during October, 1994 to June, 1995. Most of the cultivars had relatively short durations (138 to 148 days) from seeding to 50 percent bulb initiation, 50 and 75 percent leaves fall-over (168 to 184 and 175 to 189 days, respectively) and bulb harvest (186 to 194 days) but they had medium long or long bulbing period (45 to 52 days). The cultivar tropic gold was distinguished from other cultivars by its greater bulb diameter (50.7 plus or minus 2.7 mm), height (59.5 plus or minus 3.9 mm), average weight (59.7 g), higher number of marketable bulbs (100.3) harvested per plot and it produced highest yield (29.9 ton per hectare) followed by Red Creole local (22.8 ton per hectare), IRAT-69 Extra Early Cream Gold and Agrifound Dark Red. The average number of splitted bulbs per plot was found highest in Red Creole Local. Thus, the cultivar Tropic Gold performed better.
