The role of imprinting in domestic animals

For the management of domestic animals it is important to understand the formation of social bonding between individuals, where the important role is played by imprinting, an aspect of learning, which takes place during the early stages of animal's life. Imprinting enables the young animal to establish precise recognition of its parents (mother) and of other members of its species and it enables mother to recognize its offspring. In addition, imprinting has a long-term effect on behaviour, it effects food and habitat selection and sexual preferences. If the process of imprinting is disturbed, the young can be rejected by its mother and disturbances in social behaviour later in life can occur. The process of imprinting is described in pig, hen, cat, dog, sheep, horse, cattle and goat.
