In 1995 preliminary investigations of the effects of photooxidants, especially ozone, on agricultural crops, using the methodology of the International Cooperative Programme - Crops (ICP-Crops) began in Slovenia. Three sampling sites in the vicinity of meteorological and air pollution measurement stations were chosen: Zavodnje near Sostanj and Kovk in Zasavje as very polluted sites on higher elevations and Ljubljana as a site within larger city area. The presence of ozone and its phytotoxic effects was monitored using cultivars of white clover, beans, sunflower and selected natural species. The response of agricultural and seminatural plants to ozone and other photooxidants was monitored using the prescribed protocol based on observation of typical ozone induced leaf chlorosis, harvesting of biomass and measurements of selected physiological and biochemical parameters in the leaves of used indicator species. Only data of typical symptom occurrence in dependence of measured ozone concentration in the air are presented in the article. Quantitative visible leaf damage was correlated with ozone measurements in the air. Measured big ozone concentrations were always followed by occurrence of typical ozone injuries on leaves of all indicators used.
