Ginger production in relation to the effect of shade in the control of chlorosis

Two (2) ginger trials were conducted at the Craignish Demonstration Station on a calcareous soil (Princes Town Clay) to determine the role of shade in reducing lime induced iron chlorosis and the effect of chlorosis on the yield of ginger. Ginger grown under 55 percent saran netting significantly out-yielded (17.7 t/ha) those ginger plants intercropped with corn (7.9t/ha) and those grown without shade (8.8 t/ha). The incidence of chlorosis was reduced considerably in plants grown under the 55 percent saran netting. Chlorosis was widerspread in both the non-shade plots and those grown with corn. In the second trial there were no significant differences in yield of ginger plants grown with corn and peas (16.6 t/ha), ochro (17.3 t/ha) or without shade (14.5 t/ha). Chlorosis in the shaded plots was not as pronounced as in thoae ginger plants grown without shade. Finally the results of the two trails suggest that the effect of chlorosis on the yield of ginger is related to how early in the life of the crop the chlorosis occurs, and also the severity of the chlorosis
