Zanzibar exported around 120 tonnes of mangoes to the Gulf States in the 1994-5 season. Current estimated predict that the market could accomodate a rise up to 1500 t. This could be met by a ten fold increase in production of Boribo Muyuni mango. It is unlikely that this could be achieved by encouraging higher yields from current population of B. Muyuni tree using fertiliser application and improved management. To improve production an increase in the number of producing trees would have to occur. The research used a combination of hard and soft data farmers information and from two monitoring exercises. The results have provided a rapid assessment of the current production of mangoes in Southern Unguja. This form of research does not produce the same level of confidences trials, but farmers knowledge has supported and more importantly contributed to research hypothesis.
