Structural studies of some O-specific Hafnia alvei lipopolysaccharides and 3-D QSPR studies of saccharides

This thesis describes the structures of the O-specific chains from Hafnia alvei strain 32, 744 and PCM 1190, 1194, 1206 and 1210. The principal methods used in the structural studies were nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron-impact, fast-atom bombardment, matrix-assisted-laser- desorption time-of-flight mass spectormetry and specific chemical degradations. This thesis also describes how 3-D QSPR method can be used to predict the glycosylation shift of disaccharides. In this study the features important in each sugar residue for the glycosylation shift could be identified and explained in a rational way.
