Enzymes as biological catalysts are increasing feed digestibility and utilization not only in monogastric animals but also in ruminants. The main benefit of enzyme application to feeding rations for swine and poultry consists in the possibility of utilizing such feed components, that are otherwise not utilizable, or that are incorporated into feed rations in very small quantities, without any unfavourable effects on animal performance. Applied enzymes have often become a part of compound enzymatic preparations in which a more complex impact in terms of the improvement of feed digestibility and conversion efficiency is assumed. Enzymic systems that have been currently used contain a broad scope of carbohydrases, proteases, phytases and lipases supporting digestion of proteins, energy and mineral substances. As additives, even such enzymes can be used that are naturally present in the digestive tract of animals (alpha-amylase, protease and lipase). In future, production by fermentation of more efficient enzymes with desired activity can be envisaged. It can be anticipated that a certain share will be represented by enzyme production from plants.
