The influence of grass species on the enforcement of red clover in mixtures

In two-component of clover-grass mixtures of red clover (Trifolium pratense), with ryegrass (Lolium perenne), timothy (Phleum pratense), meadow fescue (Festuca pratense), and cock's foot (Dactylis glomerata), the effect of grass component as affect the enhancement of the clover in above-ground and underground biomass was studied. The yield of fodder crops was most affected by the year, grass species and share of clover. Representation of the clover in the stand, which was maximum in the third year of the vegetation, was also most affected by the year and age of stands. Amount of underground biomass during the development of stands was increasing, the share of clover roots in underground biomass of mixtures was maximum in the third year of the growing season. Great representation in biomass of roots had the red clover in mixtures with ryegrass and meadow fescue. The number of tubercles on the roots was greatest in the mixture with the ryegrass. The highest number of red clover plants and tubercles in the stand were found in the mixture of red clover and meadow fescue which should have a positive impact also on the intensity of symbiotic fixation of nitrogen, lower in ryegrass and timothy mixtures and lowest in the mixture with cock's foot. The number of tubercles was affected particularly by the grass species and age of the mixture.
