The role of women in village-level forestry development in Bangladesh

Female involvement in Bangladesh forestry is still below expected levels even after the concentrated efforts of the last two decades. Real development of the country, in particular of the forestry sector, is not possible without deliberate efforts to involve women in forestry programmes. The traditional barriers in Bangladesh culture to the full participation of women in socio-economic activities are slowly disappearing. Women started to play a positive and important role in forestry production in Bangladesh. They are involved in homestead forestry and agroforestry. Destitute women's groups receive training in raising nurseries and tree plantations, are actively participating in these activities, and female participation is on the rise. There are some 170 self-organised women NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) operating in cottage level processing of bamboo and rattan. Although there are positive signs, much more has to be done in order to make women's participation moreeffective and further their full benefit from forestry development. This paper is a brief discussion about the role played by rural women in village-level forestry development in Bangladesh.
