Major histocompatibility complex class I (BoLA-A) polymorphism in the Czech Red cattle

Analysis of genetic polymorphisms is considered to be a powerful tool in conservation genetics. We used serological typing of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I haplotypes for investigating the extent and distribution of MHC polymorphism in an endangered population of the autochtonous Czech Red cattle. Founder animals carried 9 haplotypes, the number of which was decreased in their offspring. High proportion of two haplotypes (BoLA-A20 and 21) in the actual population which represent more than 38 % of the total haplotype variability is probably due to founder effect of bulls used. Other existing haplotypes are present in rather low frequencies and the probability of their disappearance from the population is not negligible. Potential impact of this situation on further existence of the small populations is discussed with regard to biological roles of MHC.
