Content of medicarpin in red clover cultivars after infection with BYMV and Fusarium

Changes of the medicarpin level in Trifolium pratense cultivars elicited by viral and fungal pathogens were observed in greenhouses and growth chamber. Particular cultivars had different levels of resistance. After being inoculated by a complex of Fusarium spp., the resistant cultivar Vulkan showed a rapid and high increase of phytoalexin level, while the susceptible cv. Kvarta had a significantly lower phytoalexin increase rate. The reaction of the host plants to BYMV infection was similar. During the experiment the dynamics of the changes was recorded over 24 days. The most significant day-to-day change of medicarpin content came about 14 to 16 days after infection. By that time, macroscopic disease symptoms were visible as well.
