Influence of fertilization and soil properties on denitrification in some arable lands in the Czech Republic

Denitrification capacity ranging from 4.39 to 18.60 microg N2O-N/g/d was found in studied soils. Denitrification capacity depended statistically significantly on the Cox content in soils and significantly on soil pH(H2O). No dependence of denitrification capacity on soil texture was found. Only manuring and manure applied together with inorganic fertilization led to increase of denitrification capacity in soil. In most fertilized treatment further increase of denitrification capacity was not recorded. Denitrification capacity in this soil, on the contrary, was even lower than in unfertilized soil. Changes in soil chemism and particularly decrease of pH affected directly or indirectly the community of denitrifiers and resulted in decrease of potential denitrification capacity. P fertilization at medium N and K fertilization increased denitrification capacity in soil compared with unfertilized treatment but growing P dose did not lead to unambiguously increasing denitrification capacity. On the other hand increasing K dose at medium N and P fertilization increased denitrification capacity. Mechanism of the effect of K on denitrification capacity is not clear, the action may direct or indirect.
