Yield potential of mungbean in Irian Jaya

A trial on the performance of several high yielding mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.)) varieties was carried out to evaluate yield potential and other agronomic characters at alluvial soil in Irian Jaya. The trial was conducted in the dry season 1994 in low elevation of Koya Barat, Jayapura district. Randomized complete block design was used in this experiment with four replications. Six high yielding varieties and one local Irian of mungbean was tested, i.e., Parkit, Walet, Bhakti, Betet, Merpati and Nuri. They were used as high yielding varieties, while local Irian was used as a check. Plot size was 2 m x 5 m, with plant spacing 40 cm x 20 cm, 2 plants per hill. The rate of fertilizers application were 30 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 60 kg K2O/ha. The results showed that there was no significantly different among varieties that being tested in term of grain yield. However, there were four varieties which produced yield more than 1.0 t/ha, i.e. Nuri, Parkit, Bhakti and Walet. The highest yield was obtained from Nuri variety (1.24 t/ha), followed by Parkit (1.18 t/ha), while local Irian as a check 0.9 t/ha only. The highest number of pods was also produced by Nuri (44.3 pods/plant). On the other hand the rate of pods damage and leave feeders were lower with Nuri (13.5 percent of pods damage and 40.6 percent of leave feeders) which could contribute to the yield
