English. The results of composting experiment of sawdust were reported in this paper with aim to find and efficient way to produce compost from sawdust. The composts were made from pine and rubberwood sawdust. The sawdust of each species was mixed with effective microorganisms (EM4), chicken manure and water in two treatments : - Layers of sawdust of 15 cm thick were laid on top of soil alternately with EM4 (inoculum) and moist chicken manure. - Sawdust was mixed with inoculum, chicken manure and water, and the mix was put into sack and sealed. The sack was opened and stirred every month. The two treatments proceeded in four months. The results revealed that C/N ratio was still high, except for the first treatment of rubberwood where the ratio is 19.94 (less than 20). Lignin content in second treatment of pine sawdust decreased by 6.8 percent and in the first by 8.5 percent. While lignin content of compost from rubberwood in the second and first treatment decreased by 13.2 percent and 17.7 percent, consecutively. Tulisan ini menyajikan hasil percobaan pengomposan serbuk gergaji dengan sasaran menemukan suatu cara yang efisien untuk memproduksi kompos dari serbuk gergaji dicampur dengan mikroorganisme efektif. kotoran ayam dan air dalam dua macam perlakuan: - Serbuk gergaji setebal 15 cm ditumpuk di atas permukaan tanah, diselang-selingi dengan inokulum EM4 dan kotoran ayam. - Serbuk gergaji yang telah dicampur dengan inokulum, kotoran ayam dan air, kemudian dimasukkan ke dalam karung dan ditutup. Sebulan sekali karung dibuka dan campuran tadi diaduk. Kedua perlakuan tersebut dibiarkan selama empat bulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nisbah C/N masih tinggi, kecuali untuk perlakuan pertama yaitu serbuk gergaji kayu karet nisbah C/N adalah 19,94 (kurang dari 20). Kadar lignin serbuk gergaji kayu pinus pada perlakuan kedua menurun sebesar 6,8 persen dan pada perlakuan pertama mengalami penurunan sebesar 8,5 persen. Sedangkan kadar lignin kompos serbuk gergaji kayu karet pada perlakuan kedua dan perlakuan pertama menurun sekitar 13,2 persen dan 17,7 persen. Kompos dapat dibuat dari serbuk gergaji melalui perombakan oleh mikroba, akan tetapi memerlukan waktu yang lama dan cukup penambahan sumber nitrogen
