1997
Izhar, Y.
The orchid trips, Chaetanaphothrips orchidii Moulton was discovered in Israel in 1992 on grapefruit (cv. Ruby Star and Marsh Seedless) trees in an organic orchard at Ga'ton (Northern Coastal Plain); and was found afterwards on pummelo, Oroblanco (cross between pummelo and grapefruit), orange (cv. Valencia), in organic citrus orchard of Dan (Hula valley), in a conventional citrus orchard at Megadim and on the ornamentals Philodendron sp., Schefflera sp. and Pothos sp at Herzliyya (Central Coastal plain). In September 1996 the thrip was discovered at Bet haEmek (Northern Coastal Plain) on avocado. In a survey carried out during October-November 1996 thrips-inflicted fruits were found in additional 11 sites of the Northern Coastal Plain on the avocado cultivars Ettinger, Hass, Nabal, Reed, Fuerte, Benik, Horshim and Ardit. The thrips settle under sepals, or at points of contact between clustered fruits and between leaves, or branches, and fruits. In the first case star-shaped blemish around the sepals is inflicted, whereas in the other cases the damage is characterized by a ringed, circular, or oval or irregular russeting on the fruit. In extreme cases percentage of thrips-inflicted avocado (cv. Ettinger) fruits reached 74.7. On avocado fruits only adult females and larval stages were found.
