The evaluation of beef cattle production reared by crops grower in Lampung [Indonesia]

English. A study on the performance of Ongole-crossed cattle (PO) reared by the food crop farmers has been conducted during the period of September 1993 to March 1994. A total number of 157 heads of PO belonged to 60 non-PIR farmers in Astomulyo village, sub-district of Pungur and 166 heads of PO rose by 30 PIR participant farmers locate in Karang Endah, sub-districts of Terbanggi Besar were investigated. The cattle population of non-PIR group consisted of bull (4.7 percent), cows (54.1 percent), heifers and calves (42 percent) with the average body weight of 73 approx 69.7; 269.5 approx 90.9; 189.8 approx 34.1 and 262.0 approx 35.1 kg for bulls, cows, heifers and feederstock respectively. Although the average body weight was slightly lower than those reported by previous reports the reproduction showed its better performance. The cows kept by the farmers ranged 3 to 9 years old with the average 4.8 approx 2.4 years. Natural mating system is commonly practiced (9 percent) as it is compared to Artificial Insemination which only adopted by 3 percent of the farmers. The reproductive performances were : 2.8 approx 2.0 heads, 13.8 approx 1.1 months and 77.3 percent for the calving frequency, calving interval and pregnant cows respectively. The average daily gain (ADG) of feederstock was 1,0 approx 0.3 kg during the period of 4 months. The amount of feed provided by non-PIR farmers was 315 approx 4.6 kg consisted of mainly mixed forages with no concentrate while the feederstock raised under PIR-scheme received 43.4 approx 7.8 and 3.1 approx 0.2 kg of fermented pineapple waste and concentrate respectively. In general, it is concludes that PO at the studied area show a relative good performance and the pilot project of breeding program in order to produce feederstock is recommended. Untuk mengetahui performans sapi Peranakan Ongole (PO) dalam usahatani tanaman pangan di Lampung, sebanyak 157 ekor sapi milik 60 peternak non-PIR dan 166 ekor sapi milik 30 peternak peserta PIR masing-masing di desa Astomulyo, Kecamatan Punggur dan Desa Karang Endah, Kecamatan Tebanggi Besar telah diamati dari bulan September 1993 s/d Maret 1994. Komposisi populasi pada peternak non-PIR adalah 4,7, 54,1 dan 42 persen masing-masing untuk sapi pejantan, induk dan anak. Hasil pengamatan bobot badan rata-rata (kg) adalah 273,9 +- 69,7 (pejantan), 269,8 +- 90,9 (induk); 189,8 +- 34,1 (dara) dan 262,0 +- 35,1 kg (sapi yang digemukkan). Secara umum bobot badan rata-rata sapi PO dilokasi penelitian lebih rendah bila dibandingkan dengan sapi PO dilokasi lain. Induk yang dipelihara sangat produktif, rata-rata umur 4,82 +- 2,4 tahun dengan range 3 s/d 9 tahun; frekuensi beranak 2,8 +- 2,0 kali. Sistem perkawinan sapi yang dipelihara pada umumnya perkawinan alam (dengan pejantan) (97 persen) sedangkan IB baru dilaksanakan dalam jumlah yang sangat terbatas (3 persen). Performans reproduksi sangat baik : calving interval 13,8 +- 1,1 bulan; S/C 2,2 +- 0,8 dan persentase induk bunting 77,3 persen. Pertambahan berat badan harian (ADG) sapi yang digemukkan dengan pola PIR cukup baik 1,0 +- 0,3 kg. Pakan yang diberikan peternak non-PIR hanya campuran hijauan dengan jumlah 31,5 +- 4,6 kg/hari tanpa pemberian konsentrat. Untuk sapi yang digemukkan dengan pola PIR pakan yang diberikan sebanyak 43,4 +- 7,8 dan 3,2 +- 0,3 kg masing-masing terdiri dari kulit nenas dan konsentrat. Secara umum dapat disimpulkan bahwa performans sapi PO yang diteliti cukup baik dan lokasi penelitian sangat potensial dikembangkan sebagai pilot proyek pembibitan penghasil sapi bakalan untuk penggemukan. Program IB dan distribusi pejantan yang sudah diseleksi dapat direkomendasikan untuk meningkatkan mutu genetik sapi PO
