An experiment on the effect of B and Cu micro nutrients on growth of Virginia tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) on peat soil was conducted in glass house of Faculty of Agriculture, North Sumatra University from October 1990 to January 1991. The objective was to study the effect of B and Cu application on Virginia tobacco on peat soil. The experiment was done in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments were arranged in a factorial structure of 4 x 4 x 2 (four levels of B, four levels of Cu, and 2 methods of fertilizer application). Four levels of B were: 0, 5, 10, and 15 ppm of H3BO3 and four levels of Cu were 0, 5, 10, and 15 ppm of CuSO4.5H2O. Two methods of fertilizer application were directly into the soil and foliar application respectively. The results of experiment indicated that the application of B and Cu did not significantly increased the height, leaves number, crop weight, Cu-uptake by root and Cl, carbohydrate and nicotine contents. The application of B affected the B-uptake by shoot and root and the application of Cu affected the Cu-uptake by shoot. Although the application of B and Cu did not affect the yield, however the tobacco quality was good due to the low Cl, carbohydrate, and nicotine contents

Percobaan pemberian unsur mikro B dan Cu terhadap pertumbuhan tembakau Virginia pada tanah gambut, telah dilaksanakan di dalam rumah kaca Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Sumatera Utara Medan dari bulan Oktober 1990 sampai Januari 1991. Tujuan percobaan adalah untuk meneliti pengaruh B dan Cu terhadap tanaman tembakau Virginia pada tanah gambut. Penelitian dilaksanakan dengan mempergunakan rancangan acak kelompok dengan empat ulangan. Perlakuan percobaan disusun secara faktorial 4 x 4 x 2 (4 dosis B, 4 dosis Cu, dan 2 cara pemupukan). Keempat dosis B adalah 0, 5, 10, dan 15 ppm H3BO3 dan keempat dosis Cu adalah 0, 5, 10, dan 15 ppm CuSO4.5H2O. Kedua cara pemupukan masing-masing adalah langsung kepada tanah dan melalui daun. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa pemberian B, Cu dan kombinasinya tidak nyata meningkatkan tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, berat basah dan berat kering akar, berat basah dan berat kering tanaman bagian atas, serapan Cu pada akar, kandungan Cl, karbohidrat dan nikotin. Pemberian B berpengaruh terhadap serapan B pada tanaman bagian atas dan akar, sedangkan pemberian Cu berpengaruh terhadap serapan Cu pada tanaman bagian atas. Kendati pemberian B dan Cu tidak mempengaruhi hasil, namun apabila dilihat dari segi kualitas, mutu tembakau ini sangat baik sekali karena mempunyai kandungan Cl, karbohidrat dan nikotin yang rendah
