Accumulation and partitioning of nitrogen among plant parts in the high and low protein strains of maize [Zea mays]

The objective of this study was to determine the relative contribution of the maternal plant in controlling the characteristic differences between the Illinois High Protein (IHP) and Illinois Low Protein (ILP) maize strains, which differ in relative content of starch and protein in the endosperm. In this paper, field experiments were undertaken to analyze the response of the IHP and ILP strains at increasing rates of N fertilizer and to follow the partitioning of 15N applied and the subsequent remobilization of this N in the whole plant during the grain filling period. The level of activity of two enzymes that play a central role in the flow of N into organic compounds of plant cells was also investigated. The results of this study showed that IHP and ILP strains differed in dry matter production during grain development, in the amount of reduced-N accumulated, and in tha partitioning of N to the grain. In addition, the supplies of 15N showed between the IHP and ILP plants a different pattern of remobilization of reduced-N from vegetative plant parts to the developing kernels. Also, it was clearly evident that redistribution of reduced-N from stalk to the grain of ILP was practically absent. Enzymatic activity assays for nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) in the stalk and leaves indicated that ILP plants contained a lower activity of NR in leaves and a lower GS activity in the stalk compared to IHP plants

[L'obiettivo di questo studio consisteva nel determinare il contributo relativo della pianta materna nel controllare le differenze caratteristiche fra stirpi di mais Illinois High Protein (IHP) e Illinois Low Protein (ILP), che differiscono per quanto riguarda il contenuto di amido e proteine nell'endosperma. In questo lavoro sono stati realizzati esperimenti di campo al fine di analizzare la risposta delle stirpi IHP e ILP a dosi crescenti di fertilizzante azotato e di seguire la ripartizione del 15N somministrato e la successiva rimobilizzazione di questo azoto, nell'ambito dell'intera pianta, durante il periodo di riempimento della granella. E' stato pure studiato il livello di attivita' dei due enzimi che giocano un ruolo centrale nel flusso di N nei composti organici delle cellule vegetali. I risultati di questo studio hanno evidenziato che le stirpi IHP e ILP si differenziavano per quanto riguarda la produzione di sostanza secca durante lo sviluppo della granella, per la quantita' di N ridotto accumulato e per la traslocazione di N alla granella. Inoltre, le somministrazioni di 15N evidenziavano, fra le piante IHP e ILP, un differente modello di rimobilitazione dell'N ridotto dalle parti vegetative della pianta alle cariossidi in corso di sviluppo. Ancora, era chiaramente evidente che la ridistribuzione dell'azoto ridotto dal fusto alla granella in ILP era praticamente assente. I saggi di attivita' enzimatica per la nitrato riduttasi (NR) e la glutammina sintetasi (GS) nel fusto e nelle foglie indicavano che le piante ILP contenevano un'attivita' minore di NR e di GS, rispettivamente nelle foglie e nel fusto, rispetto alle piante IHP]
