The Global Positioning System (GPS) which was by the USA made available for agricultural purposes gives the chance to apply more rational and more ecological agricultural techniques. Origin and prospects of the GPS and the problems connected with adaptation of Polish domestic agricultural machines to the new system are described in the paper. It is stated that in applying precision farming in Poland it is reasonable - partly to buy adequate agricultural equipment at the leading world firms, and partly to develop some elements of the system in the country. Especially the sensors measuring output ought to be redesigned in the country and adjusted to the domestic agricultural machines
