Tasks of Gene Conservation in a Changing World
1997
Eriksson, G. (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala (Sweden). Dept. Forest Genetics)
A sound gene conservation means that the methods selected ensure that the objectives are fulfilled while taking the genetic knowledge into account. Conservation of genetic resources should based on solid genetic knowledge about genetic variation within and among populations. Such knowledge will never be available for all tree species, therefore gene conservation must be based on educated guesses. It is concluded that a modified version of the Multiple Population Breeding System will take care of gene conservation and breeding of target species as well as the gene conservation of the majority of associated species
