Differences in common root rot among barley lines selected for different environments

Sets of advanced barley (Hordeum vulgare L. subsp. vulgare) breeding lines from the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) Barley Improvement Project, selected for yield in environments with different levels of drought stress, were evaluated for common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus (Ito & Kurib.) Drechs. ex Dast.) at a low-rainfall site. Discoloration of the subcrown internodes was related to C. sativus infection. Even though plants tillered little, because of adverse growing conditions, a negative relation between level of root rot and tillering was found for a number of lines. No differences in seed yield between highly and moderately infested plants could be proved. Breeding lines with WI2292 or Athenais as one of their parents showed less root rot than lines without these parents, while breeding lines with Harmal and Rihane-03 in their pedigree had more root rot than lines without them. Although the group of lines selected for moderate-rainfall conditions showed, on average, more root rot than the two sets of lines selected for drought-stressed environments, root rot susceptible lines were present in all three sets. Selecting only for yield in drought-stressed and root-rot infested testing sites seems therefore insufficient to upgrade the level of root-rot resistance in barley germplasm
