Grain weight, protein and lysine content of water-stress tolerant bread wheat

Water-stress tolerant advanced lines of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum AZS-3, AZS-4, AZS-4-1, AZS-11) were grown along with other commercial cultivars/lines (Sarsabz, Pavon, Mehran-89, TJ-83, Thori, S-232) in a rice-wheat cropping system on residual water and evaluated for grain weight, protein and lysine content. Hundred-grain weight of all water-stress tolerant lines ranged from 3.14 g (AZS-4-1) to 4.05 g (AZS-11). AZS-11 had highest protein (12.8 percent) and lysine (4.38 mg/g flour) content. Application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers (0:0, 25:25, 50:50, 75:50 kg/ha) caused gradual and significant (P0.05) increase in grain weight, protein and lysine content of AZS-4 grains at both Tando Jam and Dokri, Pakistan. Seeding density (100, 125 and 150 kg per ha) of 150 kg per ha caused significant (P0.05) decrease in 100-grain weight at Tando Jam, but the decrease at Dokri was not significant. Effect of seeding density on protein and lysine content of AZS-4 grains was not significant. Protein and lysine content of wheat grown at Dokri was higher than that grown at Tando Jam
