Effect of different depths of irrigation on the grain yield of promising late-sown wheat cultivars

Three late-sown promising wheat (Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum) cultivars (Faisalabad-85, Pasban-90 and Inqlab-91) were tested at three levels of irrigation: I1 = five irrigations of 50 mm each, I2 = five irrigations of 65 mm each, and I3 = five irrigations of 75 mm each. There were significant differences among the irrigation treatments for grain yield and harvest index, while differences for all other characters studied were non-significant. Cultivars showed significant differences for flag-leaf area, plant height and 1000-grain weight. Irrigation and cultivar interaction were significant for harvest index. On the basis of overall results and performance of various irrigation and varietal treatments, the treatment I3 gave the maximum grain yield. Among cultivars, Faisalabad-85 performed best at I3 level of irrigation and also showed the potential of producing acceptable yield at I2 and I1 levels of irrigation
