On the 15th of February 1981 Suriname became a member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This convention tends to regulate the international trade of wild plants and animals. This regulation is of importance to Suriname for the sustainable management of the natural flora and fauna and also for the sustainable utilisation of this natural resource which creates jobs and generates foreign currency. Some of the items included in this presentation are; the legislation with regard to the CITES policies for the animal species living in the wild, the species being exported, income from exports, the monitoring of wild populations and the policy strategy and intended actions
