The jointly executed project by CELOS/ADEK on 'Recycling organic waste', started in April 1996 and was co-financed by the Dutch embassy in Paramaribo. The preliminary research which set the basis for the project formulation took a few months. As part of an integral approach towards Crop and Pest Management, practical research was carried out for one year on a variety of aspects, associated with the recycling of organic waste which resulted from activities in agriculture, horticulture and from the common household. The most important objective was to teach the target groups how to tackle the problem of increasing organic waste by composting such material and how to apply the composted material to the (vegetable) garden or in floriculture/agriculture. After an introductory research period of a few months, elucidating thereby several aspects on compost making, the first exhibition was organized, presenting the preliminary results and answers to a variety of questions and field problems. According to formulations as stated in the original project document the acquired knowledge was transferred through so-called 'train the trainer' courses 'compost making and applying'. These courses were attended by approx. 50 participants (females and males) from a wide range of target organizations. One training course was even held for a women's group in the interior of Suriname (Marowijne district, Patamaca area). Through other extension material which was developed during the project (a folder and a training-manual), through field visits and by daily networking, it was possible to disseminate the know-how to a wide range of interested people. The results of this project may give rise to a number of (research) projects, which will be explored in the near future
