[Geotechnical and socioeconomical considerations for Suriname with regard to a possible road from Paramaribo to the Amazon]

English. The socioeconomic development of Suriname is one of the main policies of the government of Suriname. Through the development of the interior it will be possible to expand the production possibilities of the natural resources. A planned Paramaribo-Santarem road will pass through the most populated areas of the interior of eastern Suriname. In this area most of the Surinamese natural resources are found and are being explored at this moment. The road should be constructed in close relationship to the southwards expanding area granted as concession for exploitation of lumber, gold and other natural resources. Concessionholders should participate in construction, especially in the part of the road through their concession. With this new road it will be possible to exploit more efficiently these resources and to provide the population of the interior with necessary provisions. However, it will be necessary to reform the mining and forestry laws and to further investigate and evolve alternative and nature-friendly exploitation methods in these areas

Dutch; Flemish. De versterking van de socio-economische weerbaarheid van Suriname is een van de belangrijkste punten in de beleidsplannen van opeenvolgende Surinaamse regeringen. Door het binnenland te ontsluiten zal de economische benuttingsgraad van Suriname vergroot kunnen worden, via uitbreiding van de productie mogelijkheden van natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Een op termijn geplande weg Paramaribo-Santarem, via een oostelijke doorgang, zal moeten gaan door de dichts bevolkte gebieden van het binnenland waar ook de meeste natuurlijke hulpbronnen aangetroffen zijn, en reeds exploraties plaatsvinden. De aanleg van de weg zal gelieerd moeten worden aan het zich naar het zuiden toe uitbreidende bestand aan concessiehouders voor hout, goud en andere relevante natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Concessiehouders zullen bij de aanleg moeten participeren, in het bijzonder waar de weg door hun concessie gaat. Door deze weg zal het mogelijk zijn, om deze hulpbronnen efficienter te exploiteren en tevens de binnenlandbevolking te voorzien van noodzakelijke nutsvoorzieningen. Het zal echter nodig zijn aanpassingen door te voeren in de mijnbouw- en bosbouwwetgeving en verder onderzoek uit te voeren naar alternatieve en milieuvriendelijke exploitatiemethoden in de land-, bos-, en mijnbouw
