A biodiversity institute for Suriname?: Lessons from Costa Rica's inbio

English. With the recent establishment of INBio, the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad, in Costa Rica, a new phase in the study, use and conservation of biodiversity has started. INBio wants to make biodiversity pay for its conservation by means of the finances generated by its issue. The mission, sustainability, organization structure, and work procedures of INBio are described, as are its relationship to the government, and to scientific and commercial partners. Existing biodiversity institutes and bioprospecting initiatives in Suriname are discussed briefly. It is concluded that Suriname might learn from Costa Rica and develop and implement innovative uses of biodiversity with a low environmental impact, which are within the human capacity present in Suriname. The creation of an Integrated Biodiversity Institute, not unlike INBio, is considered to be an attractive option for Suriname. This institute might base its structure and procedures on those of INBio, but should start out much more modest in scale, and more cautious than INBio.

Dutch; Flemish. INBio, het "Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad in Costa Rica", belichaamt een nieuwe fase in de studie, het gebruik en het behoud van biodiversiteit. Dit instituut wil de biodiversiteit behouden met fondsen gegenereerd door haar gebruik. De missie, duurzaamheid, organisatiestructuur, en werkprocedures van INBio worden beschreven, alsook INBio's relaties met de overheid en met haar wetenschappelijke en commerciele partners. Bestaande biodiversiteits-instituten en de prospectie van biodiversiteit in Suriname worden kort besproken. Er wordt geconcludeerd dat Suriname kan leren van Costa Rica, en vormen van gebruik van biodiversiteit met een zwakke milieu-impact kan ontwikkelen en toepassen, rekening houdend met de menselijke capaciteit die aanwezig is in Suriname. Het instellen van een Geintegreerd Biodiversiteits-Instituut, naar model van INBio, wordt gezien als een aantrekkelijke optie voor Suriname. Dit instituut zou zijn structuur en procedures kunnen baseren op die van INBio, maar zou bescheidener en voorzichtiger moeten starten dan INBio.
