Government supports for family farms pig production during 1990-1993

To increase pig production on family farms in Slovenia, goverment financial supports for building new and reconstruction of existent pig stalls were intended for the period between 1990-1993. Altogether 10.9 mio DEM were spent on 1339 investments. Almost half of the means were used in the region of Murska Sobota, one quarter in the Ptuj area and the rest 25% in other parts of Slovenia. Majority of investment means (70.9%) for stalls for piglets production were spent for stalls with up to 20 breeding sows, 85.4% of means for stalls for fattening pigs were invested in stalls for up to 200 animals. The ratio between the number of headspaces for breeding sows and fattening pigs was 1:3.08, that means considerable deviation from expected ratio of 1:5.93. Only in 101 investments were supports higher than 20000 DEM (27.5% of total support), which enabled building larger stalls, building more rationally, and assured more competitive production, better productivity, and, as a consequence, bringing larger income to the breeder
