Impact of moisture content and temperature on the modulus of elasticy of LVL

The article examines a research project in which the impact of moisture content and temperature on the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of LVL boards was studied. In the LVL used in the experiment, 13 layers of peeled veneer of beech (Fagus silvatica L.) of 3.2 mm nominal thickness were bonded together by means of phenol formaldehyde adhesive. Veneer sheets were joined lengthwise by using scarf joint. 40 test specimens size 40 x 40 x 830 mm (w x h x l) were made from LVL with a view to testing MOE when bending the board across the plane and edgewise. Test specimens were divided into four moisture content groups A, B, C and D. During the testing, these were heated to five temperatures: -20, 0, 20, 40 and 60 deg. C. It was established that the MOE of LVL decreased with the increasing of moisture content, and that there was a negative correlation between it and temperature. MOE was found to be the highest when LVL was frozen (-20 deg C), and was the lowest at 60 deg C. Negative correlation between the MOE of LVL and temperature is more pronounced in the case of higher moisture content levels
