A review of breeding and selection in the West Indies Indies Sugarcane Breeding and Evaluation Network. I. Central breeding and collaboration

The West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station (CBS) established as a regional organization in 1932, produced sugarcane varieties for the Caribbean Islands with the cooperation of the Barbados Sugar Cane Variety Testing Station. In 1962, the West Indies Sugar Association later called the Sugar Association of the Caribbean (SAC) took over the responsibility of running the CBS. Central breeding work was continued at the station while member industries have raised seedlings from the fuzz supplied by the CBS. Localized selection and testing of the clones led to the production of many useful varieties with local adaption. Recently this central breeding and collaboration has been described as the West Indies Sugarcane Breeding and Evaluation Network (WISBEN). The CBS maintains a large germplasm collection, conducts research on flowering, selection procedures, methods to determine brix, seed fertility, seed viability and storage, tissue culture and other areas of research connected with breeding. The CBS coordinates the varietal and information exchange.
