Relationships between grazing behaviour - dung deposition and herbage consumption [Piedmont]

English. The effects of the introduction of rotational grazing were studied on an Alpine pasture (altitude 2100 m above sea level), during the period 1990-92. Grazing behaviour of two groups of dairy cows (model I and R) was surveyed: I stayed outdoor for the whole time, while R was sheltered and milked at the farming centre. The cows of model I spent more time grazing (10 vs. 8 h) and grazing time was more regularly distributed; the movement of both herds was mainly influenced by slope, regardless of vegetation. With group I, higher dung depositions were assessed (400 vs. 227 kg ha** (-1) DM), thus providing higher N intake (till 42 kg ha** (-1)) and reducing the transfer of fertility (which favours the spreading of species with low forage value, such as Nardus stricta). Animal production was not affected by unfavourable conditions linked to outdoor staying. The results highlight that capital outlays to build night shelters should be steered to equipment on pasture (electric fences, water points) and to improve the management of herds

In un alpeggio delle Alpi occidentali (2100 m s.l.m.), nel triennio 1990-92, sono stati confrontati il pascolamento integrale (modello I) e il pascolamento diurno con pernottamento in stalla (modello R). Per entrambi i modelli si e' impegnata una mandria di vacche da latte, adottando il pascolamento turnato su aree omologhe. I rilievi hanno riguardato il prelievo dell'erba, la distribuzione delle deiezioni sul pascolo e il comportamento degli animali. Gli animali del modello I, rispetto a R, hanno dedicato piu' tempo al pascolamento attivo (10 vs. 8 h), distribuendolo piu' regolarmente nelle 24 h. La piu' lunga permanenza sul pascolo si e' tradotta in una maggiore deposizione di deiezioni (400 vs. 227 kg ha** (-1) di s.s.) e, quindi, in un superiore apporto di nutrienti (fino a 42 kg ha** (-1) di N). Cio' ha ridotto i trasferimenti di fertilita' che, protratti nel tempo, sono all'origine della comparsa di specie di ridotto valore foraggero. I risultati conseguiti incoraggiano l'investimento, piu' che in ricoveri per gli animali, in adeguate strutture sul pascolo per fornire una corretta gestione
