Transformation of agricultural cooperative organizations in Slovenia
1997
Kovacic, M. (Ljubljana Univ. (Slovenia). Biotechnical Fac., Agronomy Dept.)
The paper examines the transformation of agricultural cooperatives in Slovenia after 1992, the methods used, effects, and problems of this process. We studied 12 cooperatives in detail, using the method of systems analysis of economic organizations. The process of transformation has been formally completed, however, it has not been in terms of content. We identified 5 models of transformation. The most important problems are: identity and confidence crisis, economic inefficiency, lack of capital, weak business links. Majority of managers held that an efficient cooperative system is a precondition for successful integration of Slovenia in the European Union. Government does not provide sufficient support as to the development of cooperatives. The cooperatives face fundamental dilemma either to develop as business corporations or to preserve principles of cooperative identity as they increase their capital basis and strengthen business links.
