Response of arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) to mulching, weeding and nitrogen fertilizer. cv. Agro.
Msanjama, M.N. | Mainjeni, D.D.
Coffee orchards in Malawi particularly those under resources-poor farmers, often suffer severe weed competition during the wet season and also frequently suffer water stress during the long dry season which unfortunately coincides with the phases of berry growth development. Attempts to maintain weed-free conditions in the wet season usually have limited success due to frequent showers which make weed control using hoes both difficult and laborious. Furthermore, competition for labour between coffee and other crops such as maize, also tends to contribute to the problem of weed control in coffee orchards during the crop growing season.
