Faunistic and silvicultural survey of a natural gap in a mixed beech forest

In einer Bestandeslucke, die in einem 135-jahrigen Buchen-Edellaubholzmischbestand (sudliches Weserbergland) nach Sturmbruch einer durch Buchenwollschildlaus und Folgeerreger befallenen Altbuche entstanden ist, wurden in einer Momentaufnahme die raumlich, zeitlich und stofflich miteinander verknupften Prozesse des Biomasseabbaus (Holzzersetzung) und des Biomasseaufbaus (Naturverjungung) erfasst. Der Zustand des stehend verbliebenen ca. 3,5 m hohen Reststammstucks wurde sektionsweise optisch-mechanisch klassifiziert und in raumliche Beziehung zu der besiedelnden Fauna gestellt. Auf 2 m breiten Aufnahmestreifen durch die Bestandeslucke in Nord-Sud- und Ost-West-Richtung wurden Position, Hohe und Wurzelhalsdurchmesser derNaturverjungung aufgenommen. - Auf- wie abbauende Prozesse verliefen unter Ausbildung einer ausgesprochenen Mosaikstruktur. Der Buchenreststamm befand sich, gefordert durch hohe Feuchte, in einem fortgeschrittenen Stadium der kleinraumig sehr differenzierten Zersetzung. Er war durch Vertreter von 10 Tierordnungen besiedelt, Coleoptera (35%), Isopoda (18%) und Oligochaeta (17%) herrschten vor, wenig spezialisierte Zersetzer des Waldbodens hatten einen Stratenwechsel in den Stamm vollzogen. DieNaturverjungung wurde von Ahorn und Esche dominiert, die Buche machte nur einen geringen Anteil aus. Eine kleinraumig differenzierte Vertikal- und Horizontalstruktur hatte sich ausgebildet, Licht als Standortfaktor war die entscheidende Steuergrosse. - Die Gesamtaufnahme verdeutlichte, dass die Bestandesregeneration in Form von Naturverjungung 7 Jahre nach dem Storereignis Sturmbruch bereits in die logarithmische Wachstumsphase, der Holzabbau dagegen in die Auslaufphase eingetreten waren. Beide Prozessebeeinflussen sich merklich, z.B. Schaffung eines feuchtkuhlen, die Stammzersetzung fordernden Mikroklimas durch die beschattende Naturverjungung.
