Growth of sweet cherry cultivars in a very dense planting without pruning

Natural development of tree canopies has been evaluated for 6 years with 10 sweet cherry cultivars planted on vigorous seed rootstock P-TU-2 at a spacing 5 x 1 m and grown without any pruning. Development of tree canopy, trunk-cross-section area, length and number of shoots, crotch angles, rate of branching, number of fruiting twigs and spurs, share of dead wood and several other derived characters were studied. The final appraisal proved considerable differences between the particular cultivars as for their response to conditions of extreme thickening. The cultivars Kordia, Karecova and Napoleonova seem to be the least suitable ones for such dense plantings on the basis of these results. Canopies of these cultivars have a tendency to implausible thickening and their inner parts rapidly wither away in proportions to an increase of their canopies. On the other hand the cultivar Summit and partly also cultivar Van seem to be the most suitable for this type of orchards. Cultivars Techlovan and Vanda have vigorous growth but their canopies still could be improved by suitable pruning because of their heavy spurring and a character of branching.
