The effect of different carbon sources and cultivars on in vitro micropropagation of some rootstocks of the genus Prunus

Effects of different sugars were examined in the multiplication stage of in vitro propagation of some rootstock clones of the genus Prunus (peaches, peach x almond crosses - Barier, Pozar, GF 677, Kando; plums - Torinel). Cultivation was conducted in Q medium with modified formulation. An amount of 25 g/l sucrose was used as control, other tested sugars were glucose, fructose and sorbitol at a dose of 25 g/l. The results indicate positive effects of glucose on average shoot number and leaf color in peach rootstock clones in comparison with the other sugars including the most frequently used sucrose. As for shoot length and leaf area (leaf index), the responses are less homogeneous and are substantially influenced by genotype. The results in Torinel clone show that fructose, and/or glucose, are much more convenient sugars for micropropagation than currently used sucrose.
